"Special" People, Special Privileges

NOTE: This "Tear" was written after reports of a drunken driving incident involving US Congressional Representative Patrick Kennedy were publicized. Congressman Kennedy was observed driving erratically, as he collided with a divider. Once he was stopped by the police, he claimed, at approx. 2:00AM, that he was on his way to a Congressional meeting. Inexplicably, or not, Rep. Kennedy was not arrested, nor was a breathalyzer test administered. Thus was generated the inspiration for this "Tear". (GG)

The recent incident involving "Sir" Patrick Kennedy brings to mind the special treatment that we reserve for the unique example of American "Royalty" that is the Kennedy family. It seems that America has developed respect and affection for the Kennedys, based upon their sacrifices and the distinction they have accomplished.
Beginning with Joseph Sr., family patriarch, who sacrificed his sense of decency and right and wrong by smuggling and bootleging whiskey during prohibition, in cooperation with organized crime, the special treatment received by this clan is well documented. As ambassador to great Britain, he distinguished himself by virtue of his sympathy for Nazism and his opposition to our assistance to Gernamy's enemies. His martyred eldest son, Joseph Jr., has been accliamed as a hero because of his death during WWII, unlike the many thousands of unprivileged American soldiers who served and died, but were not Kennedys. The sainted John and Robert were assassinated while serving and/or pursuing the office of President of the United States, in karmic justice for screwing and murdering Marilyn Monroe and spying on Martin Luther King Jr. We all remember "Teddy the Great" who sacrificed his secretary, Mary Jo Kopeckne, and his valiant effort to avoid justice for his actions. His drunken cavorting and his "waitress sanwiches" distinguished him among his fellow senators. His hubris and fecundity are legendary. Let us not forget John-John, whose cocaine use (or addiction) drove him to attempt an ill fated, foolhardy flight in terrible flying conditions, without a proper flight plan. Among the other distinctions enjoyed by this family include drunken revelry on the ski slopes, ending with a deadly collision with an evil tree, allegations of rape at the hands of a horrid wench who refused to accept the "affections" of a doctor-to-be.
Yes, I do believe that the sacrifices and distinctions of this family have "earned" them a unique place in our culture, worthy of the special treatment they receive. I would, however, like to make a suggestion designed to palatize the privilege they so richly deserve. I propose that we institutionalize the "Kennedy privilege" in a manner similar to the treatment of diplomats. If this privilege were to be formalized, the public would have no illusions about the special nature of this great family. All policemen would undoubtedly be aware that any member of the Kennedy clan would not be subject to the same laws as the rest of us. They would not be subject to intrusive and insulting breatalyzer test, no matter what traffic offense they committed. Citizens who were (un)fortunate enough come in contact with a member of the Kennedy clan, would be aware that these folks would not be held responsible for anything they are alleged to have done, regardless of its impact on others or the suspicious circumstances surrounding any such incident. Parents would be able to warn their daughters to avoid contact with Kennedy "gentlemen";they would be able to advise their sons not to socialize with Kennedys, since acts committed by Kennedys would go unpunished and would probably be blamed on their innocent companions. Waitresses would aware that no conduct is ever unbecoming to a Kennedy, including drunkeness and sexual harassment. Motor vehicles and airplanes owned (or leased) by a member of the Kennedy family could be appropriately identified, with special markings, so that average citizens could avoid driving near them or riding in them.
While our greateful nation must be compelled to honor and respect this cabal with a special and unique "Kennedy privilege", recognizing and institutionalizing this (dis)honor would go a long way in preserving the ridiculous myth that, in America, nobody is above the law. God Bless the King - make that the Kennedys.

SECOND NOTE: My new and relevant question is: How does this "Tear" apply to Caroline Kennedy, whi wishes to be appointed (anointed) Senator from NY state, despite an apparent lack of any qualifications whatsoever?
